About the Collaboration
This book was created as a collaboration between the Just Food Collective and Open Table.
Just Food Collective is a not-for-profit founded in 2021 by Food Studies students wanting to make a real-world impact in the food system. We are a diverse group of graduates, hospitality workers, researchers, and advocates, working together to rethink and reshape our local food system. Our work is varied and far reaching, from conducting and publishing research, to cross-organisational and international advocacy campaigns. Our most recent project aims to curb student food insecurity, Well Fed: A Student Food Project.
Well Fed is creating new models for dignified solutions to food insecurity with low-cost communal meals and 'good life' workshops—from pickling parties and low-cost cooking to mindful eating and small-space gardening. It’s about creating a student-led model of food justice, connection and skill-building. Find out more here.
Open Table is a Melbourne-based food relief charity that’s all about good food, reducing waste, and bringing people together. Starting out in 2014 as a student-led project turning rescued food into free community lunches, we’ve grown a lot since then.
These days, a large team of amazing volunteers helps us run weekly meals, community pantries and fresh food markets across Melbourne’s inner north.
We rescue quality surplus food from grocers, markets, bakeries and food rescue networks, and get it to where it’s needed most. We also run cooking workshops, playgroups and our No Waste Cook Clubs—sharing practical skills to help people cook confidently and cut down on food waste. More than anything, we’re working to create inclusive, welcoming spaces where people can connect over good food. Learn more here.
