Open Pantry

Open Pantry is our barrier-free food access program providing free, fresh produce and pantry staples, along with a warm, shared meal for anyone experiencing food insecurity, social isolation, or financial stress. There are no eligibility requirements, no referrals — just good food, a welcoming space, and a seat at the table for all.

Each week, we rescue surplus food that would otherwise go to waste and redistribute it to individuals and families in need through our Community Lunches, Fresh Food Market and Community Pantry. We operate across Melbourne’s inner north, with regular events in North Fitzroy and Carlton. The food is served with dignity, often around long tables, fostering connection and community.

Open Pantry is powered by volunteers, partnerships with local food donors and the trust and engagement of our local communities.

It's more than a meal — it’s a model of low-cost, high-impact community care that supports wellbeing, builds relationships, and reduces food waste.

Cook & Connect Playgroup

Cook & Connect Playgroup is a hands-on food literacy program for children aged 0–4 and their caregivers. Delivered weekly in Glenroy and Fawkner, the playgroup brings families together to explore fresh food through simple, age-appropriate food activities — chopping, mixing, smelling, tasting and making meals together.

Each session uses fresh, seasonal produce from our community food partners and includes a shared meal, interactive games, and sensory experiences that help little ones build early positive relationships with healthy food. It’s joyful, messy, and designed to support caregivers to feel more confident about nutrition, food preparation, and using what they have.

Research shows that the early years are critical for setting lifelong food habits. By creating a supportive, welcoming environment — especially for families experiencing social isolation or food insecurity — Cook & Connect helps lay the foundation for long-term food security and healthier communities.

The program is funded by VicHealth and delivered in partnership with local councils, libraries and food hubs. If you're part of a council or community organisation interested in replicating or adapting the Cook & Connect model, we’d love to chat.
